Brain Injury<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Each year in New York State, over 110,000 emergency department visits and close to 20,000 hospitalizations are the result of Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). Stroke, a non-traumatic or acquired brain injury, affects more than 795,000 people a year in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The impact of a brain injury is often life-changing for survivors, their families, and caregivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EPI offers Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Waiver<\/a> and Nursing Home Transition and Diversion (NHTD) Waiver<\/a> services. These Medicaid programs provide individuals with a TBI the support they need to live in their community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EPI offers counseling, training, and tailored programs for adults with brain injuries. We were one of the first agencies in New York to provide specialized TBI services, which despite their name, serve people with all types of acquired brain injuries. Building on our expertise, EPI developed innovative and highly personalized services to assist people with their recoveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are Traumatic and Acquired Brain Injuries?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An Acquired Brain Injury <\/strong>is an injury to the brain that occurs after birth and is not the result of hereditary, congenital, or degenerative conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Traumatic Brain Injury <\/strong>is caused by a blow or impact to the head that damages the brain. Common causes include vehicle accidents, falls, sports and firearm injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Non-traumatic Brain Injury <\/strong>is caused by an internal injury to the brain and common causes include stroke, infection, ingestion of toxic chemicals or drug overdose, lack of oxygen to the brain and near-drowning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Symptoms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Brain injuries can be minor, resulting in temporary symptoms such as headaches or dizziness. They can also be serious, with permanent or long-lasting disabilities. A person who suffered a severe brain injury might experience a wide range of physical and psychological effects, including:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
